California Tread Separation Lawyers

Tread separation accidents happen every day. Sometimes they are due to defective design or poor manufacturing and other times they are due to poor maintenance or failure to replace old tires. The phenomenon of tread separation accidents is fairly recent; it was brought on with the advent of steel-belted radial tires. Steel-belted radial tires are different from traditional diagonal bias-ply tires. They minimize tread wear, get better fuel economy and provide drivers with better handling due to more flexible sidewalls. Steel-belted radial tires also get about 100,000 miles of wear compared to bias-ply tires which only get about 30,000 miles of wear.

The benefits of steel-belted radial tires are obvious, which is why they come standard on most motor vehicles. However, they do pose problems that diagonal bias-ply tires did not. When tires are underinflated, aged or too hot, it can cause tread separation. This can lead to tire blowouts. At high speeds, tire blowouts are almost always catastrophic, as they have the potential to result in rollovers. This is particularly a concern for drivers and passengers of SUVs. An experienced California tread separation attorney should have the knowledge and resources to be able to investigate a tire blowout accident and determine who is at fault for the tire's failure.
